Current Flow through the Carbon Brushes in an Electric Motor.

The current flows along a flexible towards the brush where it divides into two paths. 50% of the current flows down one side of the brush into a commutator segment that allows the current to flow clockwise around the armature. The remaining 50% of the current flows into the adjacent commutator segment to allow the current to flow anti-clockwise around the armature.
Both of these currents flow around the armature and enter the carbon brush on the opposite side where they flow into the second brush and converge as they enter the flexible.
This action in turn creates magnetic fields in the armature that causes the armature to rotate and position two new segments underneath each brush.
This action is repeated and continues all the time the current is switched on allowing the motor to revolve and transmit power through the shaft to drive various types of  applications.
